The
next time you take a ride
on the Balboa Island Ferry,
take a look a the bell near the deck of the ferry's wheel house. Regulations require that
all vessels have a bell. And when at anchor in fog, produce a rapid ringing of the bell
for five seconds every minute. |
Because the ferry is never at
anchor, the bell is never used for this purpose. However, the wheel house bell does have
its uses. If the ferry hits the dock hard enough, it's a "Bell ringer."
