Whale Watching

The California Gray Whale makes the most spectacular and longest mass migration of any marine mammal. Gray Whales Migrate Annually along the west coast of North America from the summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to the winter grounds of the Baja California lagoons and back again along the Orange County coast during the months of December, January, February, March, and early April. Balboa's Sport Fishing boats offer Whale Watching Cruses so that children and adults may thrill at the sight of these magnificent mammals as they pass along the coast. THE DOLL HOUSE

From TalesOfBalboa the Book

Just after the end of World War II, The Doll House opened at 415 E. Balboa Boulevard.  The Doll House was noted as one of Balboa's favorite spots for a good time and was popular with the Hollywood set, such as Jerry Colona. Peggy Lee, who worked at the old Fun Zone, got her start at The Doll House.  The noise level was so high she couldn't sing over it so she sang under it, forcing the crowd to listen to her.  It is said this is how she developed her style. With its red and white old barn exterior and red and white checked tablecloths, The Doll House is remembered by locals as a fun place where the music would pour out onto the streets every night. Owned by Jane Manchester and operated with the help of some loyal Philippine workers and hostesses (not waitresses), there were several Doll Houses, others being located in Palm Springs and Laguna Beach. The specialties of the house were "Those Potatoes" and the hostesses.  That's right, the hostesses made an easy $500.00 a week keeping the customers happy.  Or as Jim Laster says, "I should know.  My second wife was one of them." The Doll House was torn down in the late 1960's and apartments were built on the site.

Viewer Email & Memories

I just thought I would send a thank you to Alice Smith who passed on just before Christmas 2007 at the age of 102 1/2 (one can't forget the 1/2 when you get to 102).  She brought 54 years of happiness that she shared here on Island Ave.  I remember when she and her husband, Frank, moved here when I was 6, and he was one of the first people to teach me how to fish, while she was sort of like a second grandmother to us all.  She was a sweet, loving fixture in our special neighborhood and will be missed dearly, but she will always be with us in our hearts.

I grew up in Newport Beach. My friends and I grew up hanging out at the Fun Zone, it was a great time in my life. We would go the beach all day and then go to parties or beach bonfires at night. I had my first job at 16 yrs. old at Pizza Pete's in the Fun Zone, several friends worked at the nearby arcades and at Hot Dog On a Stick. It was such an innocent, simple time, no cellphones, no Internet. If I wanted to see friends, i could always go out on a weekend night or anytime in the summer and have a great time. I have only fond memories of childhood in Balboa. I am so blessed to have grown up in the area.

Jim,  I also wanted to tell you how glad I am that you have the web cams on your site.   Last month,  right after Christmas members of my family gathered in Balboa in honor of one of my brothers who died one year ago.   We couldn't be there,  but I told them to call me when they got to the Fun Zone.  I was able to direct them to the camera by the ferry.   I got good pictures of all of them.   Thanks,   you were a big help.

Neat website.  What got me here????  Thumbnail sketch answer...I watched a Discovery Channel show about the sinking of the Lusitania and saw that there was a Vanderbilt aboard who perished.  I Googled him and then read about his son, George Washington Vanderbilt and it mentioned that he was a yachtman and owned the "Pioneer."  I couldn't believe it was the same "Pioneer" that I used to see in the Turning Basin, along with the "Goodwill" - in days gone by, and sure enough, your website gave me the answer that yes - it was the same "Pioneer," and is now a Windjammer Cruise Yacht!  Enjoy the beach everyone...I live in Ohio now and it is a LONG way from your gorgeous harbor!!

Thanks for all your help in tracing Barbara.
The memories of my time spent with Barbara and the people i met while visiting your beautiful town will keep me wanting to return to live it all again.
Again many thanks

Thank you for a nostalgic ride on the ferry!!  I used to go from Bal to the Island often...and in my teen years, even jumped off (once or twice, shame on me!) and swim ashore to avoid the 5c fare...well, really, just to say I jumped!  Thanks again!  (5c?  Does that really date me as a teenager a wee bit before the '50s?)

I am looking for the link to the vacation photos of Salton Sea mentioned in a recent issue of the Tales of Balboa.  Can you please direct me to the link?  I love your website and the newsletter.
Thanks, Mike

Remember? Newport blvd was three lanes with the suicide lane in the middle past the Paulo drivein? that was a while ago.

I need the phone number for the handyman, Balboa Bob.  He did some work for us but I don't have his number here.  (We have a house in Balboa but live in Moraga (near San Francisco)
Thanks

I enjoyed reading the piece mentioning the Beach Roamer, as I played (music) there on a couple of Sunday afternoons in the summer of '63. I also played once at Balboa Pavillion, while our regular gig was 6 nights a week at the Firehouse on 17th St. in Costa Mesa. Does anyone know what the address of the Beach Roamer was?

I fondly remember Balboa and Newport. Long ago, it seems in another life, we would surf during the day and go to the Rendevous at night (Dick Dale and the Beachboys were known only locally). If we were lucky at the Rendevous, we would take our dates to the bluffs overlooking Newport - I believe there is now a hospital there. However, I also have fond memories of past encounters around what was then 'back bay'. Balboa and Newport had many actors and artists - I would often see John Wayne or actors from the Bonanza TV series grocery shopping. Although the years have passed, I will someday take my wife to newport and see if there is anything left that I remember.
Thanks for the memories
Bob
