THE GARAGE
SALE QUEEN

From TalesOfBalboa the Book

Almost every Sunday afternoon on the southeast corner of Bay Avenue and Adams Street, in the garage at the alley, you will find the Garage Sale Queen, Marion Perrault. Marion, who owns the house that she operates out of but lives in South Pasadena, has been coming down to Balboa almost every weekend for the last 45 years. In the late 1980s, Marion, with the help of her South Pasadena neighbor and childhood friend Allen Love, started holding garage sales to help out the local charities. Almost every weekend this 77 year old pair open Marion's garage to the public with a vast assortment of wares from A to Z. Marion says she first started doing the garage sales because, "My daughter didn't know what to do with all her things." Soon her grandchildren and her neighbors were donating items for Marion's garage sales. "Every week I go through these things and give things to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and the Veterans," Marion explains. All monies received from the Sunday sales are donated to charities such as, the Red Cross, City of Hope, and the Salvation Army. When asked why she does it, Marion says, [it's] "The gift of love. I'd rather be down here, I enjoy my neighbors and new friends, than sitting up there alone. [Referring to her upstairs apartment in the same building] I love asking people where they come from." Marion's visitors / customers represent a vast array of people. She remembers a young man needing a pair of shoes so he could get into one of the local bars. Of course charity begins at home, and this applies to Marion too. When two boys came by one time, cold and shivering because someone had stolen their clothes, Marion gave them clothes and a blanket free. She says that anyone who is in need will never be turned away. In addition to the garage sales, Marion collects things for special needs. Each fall, Marion donates all the bowling balls, trophies, and sports equipment she can get her hands on to the Special Olympics in Santa Ana.

Do you know of Patrick Kelly who painted a limited edition called "Balboa Days". We have an original copy and would like to know it's value.

Hi Jim,
I Love your website! I have been to Balaboa California every summer since I can remember to go on vacation. I love to come to your website and see how everything is going down there and see any new news. As I was reading some of the viewer emails and comments I noticed one of them talking about the Balboa Market closed...? Is that true? If so when did it close? Also is the Fun Zone still there? Or what is giong in its place..? So if you could please help me and let me know if they have closed or it was just a rumor. Please write back when you get a chance. Thanks for your time.

Jim:
Great site!  I view it often.  I think the camera you have marked "Balboa Beach West" is either incorrect or misleading - it is the Newport Pier.  If that's what you want to show, why not name it that?

Jim,
are you on the Myspace?

Hi all,

We, too, are lovers of Balboa since we discovered it in 2003, and we visit as much as we can. We're from Pennsylvania and are readying for our annual trip. Since we fly and then rent a car, we are limited in the amount of equipment we can bring. This year we are going to have a lot more time to lounge on the beach, so we were wondering if anyone out there could help us with some info. Is there anyplace in Balboa that rents beach umbrellas or tent shelters, and beach chairs? As I mentioned we can't bring them on the plane, but we don't recall finding any shops that have this type of equipment. I know that there is a surf shop on 15th street but that's about it, and I'm not sure they are into what we're looking for. We're willing to buy if we have to, but since we'd have to leave the equipment behind it just makes more sense to rent. We hope to hear from anyone with suggestions, and thanks to all.

Jim Fournier, we're also looking forward to seeing you again in your shop. Your Tales of Balboa screen saver is installed on all of our computers. Maybe you'll remember the "Disney teacher" and his wife. We certainly enjoy your Tales of Balboa website all year.

Hello!

I am writing because I am a tour operator and some of our travelers expressed an interest in attending the annual garage sale in May 2008.  We will be coming to Balboa Island from Los Angeles on a bus.I wrote Carolyn Carr for information about bus parking and was referred to you.
Will you be able to help us with parking our bus?

My grandmother was Henrietta Tudor (Grand) she was the daughter, I believe of Harry "Pop" Tudor who at some point built and owned the Rendezvous Pavilion ballroom.  She was married to Marcel Grand and died when my father was approximately five years old of tuberculosis.  As I understand it she was in a sanitorium for tb.  I would like to find out where she is buried and I would also like to find out if she had any siblings and if they have offspring that may be living .  I just would love to find out anything I can about any of the family.  My father (Harry Tudor Grand) is deceased now and I really have a constant pull to find out more about the family.  I have old pictures of the Rendezvous and a lot of pictures of sailboats.  It appears my grandmother was very interested in sailing.  If anyone has any info regarding this family I would love to hear from you.
