THE PIGEON MASTER

From TalesOfBalboa the Book

Marty Zofchak has been coming down to Balboa every day since 1992. You can see him sitting on one of the Fun Zone's benches, where the pigeons literally eat out of his hand. Marty's a retiree who was involved in used cars and real estate. He enjoys talking with the tourists and loves it when the kids say, "Show me how to do it." Within minutes Marty has the kids getting the pigeons to fly to their hands for a piece of bread. Not a day goes by that a tourist doesn't ask Marty to pose with a child for a picture. "I started bringing four slices of bread with me," states Marty, "but now I bring a half loaf." Louise, the Carousel Lady, brings bread for Marty too. Besides feeding the ducks and pigeons, Marty finds that the fish can also be a lot of fun. "The bay is full of minnows and smelt. And you can get the smelt to jump right out of the water for a piece of bread," he says. The next time you find yourself going to the Fun Zone, be sure to take a couple of slices of bread for Marty and his friends.

ART'S LANDING

Before it was Newport Landing, it was Art's Landing, a Balboa fixture. And who can forget Gary's Coffee Shop and his great omelets  served outside on those old wooden benches. And when the tide was high you just had breakfast with your shoes off.

I visited your web site - it's terrific! I'm looking for a black and white sketch of the Pavilion. My parents had one, I have one and I'm looking for some to give as wedding gifts. It is dated 1975 and looks like it says Winchester. Do you sell anything like that or know where I can get some? I see your photos of the Pavilion. Do you also have sketches? Do you have some photos framed and ready to go at your gallery? Thanks for the help.

Can you please tell me if Dewey still works on the Balboa Island Ferry.  He was so great with the kids on our last trip I wanted to return when he was working. Thank you very much for your help.  I didn't see an e-mail address for the ferry itself.

As a college student I took the summer of 85 off, traveled from Florida with three friends and spent the entire summer on Balboa. I worked at Neeto Burrito...which was a great place to meet locals and get invited to parties. It was a fantastic time...and yes, we did actually make it back in time for the fall semester. What became of Neeto?
Jim,
Thanks for the info. Even when I was working there, the locals would come in asking, "Dude, where's the cookie monster?" When I inquired about it, the manager (I wish I could remember his name...he had been a roadie for America) told me that they occasionally put an extra ingredient in their always excellent cookies. When there was a "special" batch available, a cookie monster muppet was placed in the front window. Oh, and come to think of it...Phil had just gotten out of jail at that time. I didn't see much of him; he was busy at a second location he had just opened. It was more of a traditional sit-down type of place.
If you know of any photos of the the street from that period that show Neeto, I'd love to see them. It was a hilarious place to work for the summer; there were two illegals (Jesus and Elvis, no kidding) working with me. It was quite a collection of characters on both sides of the counter.
Thanks again,
Daniel

Hi
Have finished the Beek book.  It is at the printers.  8x11''  180 pages with pictures.  Generalizes all the Beek offspring of Joseph Beek b. 1776 in Bandon Ireland. Cost should be about $15.  Might make good Christmas presents. If interested, let me know.  Only ran 100 copies.

Jim,
Thought I'd let you know that someone kicked the Balboa Bay webcam off it's axis...Newport Bay is pouring out of the left side of my browser window! It used to be nice and level...
Just an FYI
