THE RED CARPET

From TalesOfBalboa the Book

It was a quiet September night in the late 1970s when four drunks who were being ejected broke the silence from the Red Carpet for fighting. The Red Carpet was a beer bar located on Palm Street, and was noted for its twenty-five-cent draft beer. With tremendous energy and tenacity, the four-men, one-on-one, were engaged in a full on knock-down-drag-out fistfight. Cursing at the top of their lungs, they questioned each other's family heritage while accusing each other of incest and homosexual activities. While fiercely attempting to punch each other's lights out, the group made their way down Palm Street towards Oceanfront. Suddenly, it was like they were dancing. They stopped, changed partners, and proceeded to beat their new adversaries to a pulp. After a few minutes the rowdies made their way down Oceanfront and their shouts faded. About a half-hour later the silence of the night was once again broken, this time by laughter and singing. From around the corner reappeared the same four men, singing and laughing with arms around each other. They made their way to The Red Carpet and were 86ed at the door.

Totally LOVE the cameras!!! We try to get to Balboa at least once a year (from Salt Lake City) and we always stay at the Balboa Inn on the third floor with the balcony on Main Street, so it is fun to see it on the cameras!! We always ride the ferry ten or twelve times while we're there and almost always come back from the island with a new painting or a wreath. Balboa is just too GREAT for words...I hope it will always stay as special as it is!! Thank you again for Tales of Balboa and for the cameras, which are especially fun to look at while I look out my window at another damn winter snow storm!!!

Balboa Blvd. was "Central Ave." early on, and didn't become "Balboa Blvd." until in the later 1940's.  I used to live on the blvd, when it was one lane each way and just after they took out the railroad tracks from the center.  Wonderful old fishing town.  Your pictures make me homesick.  But thank you so much for them.

Jim, sure enjoyed the tour thru your site as I spent many wonderful days on the peninsula and still work there at times. I'm just finishing a documentary and educational dvd on the origins and history of surf music as I was a drummer in one of the early groups that played at the Rendezvous and would be interested in finding a nice spot to do a show this summer featuring members of  different famous surf groups. I didn't know if the little park next to Balboa Pier would accomadate an audience of 300 to 500 people. If you have any ideas, would really appreciate them.Thank you, Bob Colwell.

I was recently in your lovely city on a photo-tour.  I am a photographer and captured some beautiful images there.  Please feel free to view them at www.iPhotoHomes.com.  I hope to be coming back soon.

have wonderful memories of Balboa, spending many summers there.  My church also had their camp (MarCasa) at the end of main street.  I think my best memories of my life are my children, my wedding and Balboa Island.  I always hoped I would live there in retirement.

Hi  Southern Cal ~
My name is Bob Rohrer and i moved from southern Cal. in 97 to the land of ice and snow, (Minnesota). And to tell the truth, I'd like to have my surfboard back and to smell the ocean, the pier, and the sea and ski oil we use to put on our bods as we were burning in the New Port Beach sun. But for now that's history. You know, times change.
Thank you for this Web Cam site. It's the best thing to being in New Port Beach which is close to my hart ( Can't forget Huntington Beach either).
Thank you again for the ongoing memories on this Tales Of Balboa site.
