WOW JIM, I CANT BELIEVE I GET TO SEE HOME. JIM HUTTON GAVE ME THE SITE LAST WEEK. IF YOU RECALL, I LIVED IN THE BUNGALOWS & THE DUPLEX BEHIND YOU. REMEMBER ALL THE POTS AND PLANTING WE DID TOGETHER? I WAS HEADED TO SEATTLE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT? (7 YEARS AGO) IF I STILL DONT RING A BELL, LONG BLONDE HAIR, PAINTED DUPLEX EVERY SUMMER WITH JIM, MOVED MULTIPLE PALM TREES AROUND, WAS BUDS WITH CARL & JULIE MCMACKEN (MOLLY BROWNS) AND JULIE LEWIS. WELL ANYWAY, SEEING HOME GOT ME A LITTLE TEARY!!! I WAS HOME 5 YEARS AGO TO SEE "CIRQUE" AND COULDNT BELIEVE THAT THE BACK BAY WETLANDS WERE NO MORE, VINTAGE BALBOA HOMES WERE GONE, MAIN STREET HAD SUFFERED SO MUCH AND NOW THE FATE OF THOSE BEAUTIFUL JUNGLE PAINTINGS HAD DETERIORATED, AND THE PAVILLION! IT REALLY WAS SHOCKINGLY SAD. HI TO KAREN & ERIC AT THE SALOON, EVERYONE ON THE 300 BLOCK OF EAST BAY AVE. AND THE ALL THE GOOD FRIENDS I MADE IN THE 15 YEARS I TOODLED AROUND TOWN. I STILL REFERE TO OUR SPECIAL COMMUNITY AS HOME. KAT ZIMMERMAN, IF YOU SEE THIS, BONNIE SAYS TO CALL HER AND E-MAIL ME. THANX AGAIN JIM, I WILL BE LOGGING ON...THE SITE YOU'VE CREATED IS TRUELY SOMETHING. GRATEFULLY YOURS, KATHLEEN HANCOCK.

I lived in Costa Mesa in the 50's but I spent my free time in Balboa. I am a grad of Harbor High class of 57. Does anyone remember the car club "Koolies of Balboa" ? I had a great time with a great bunch of guys. I just discoverd your web sit, it is great.

Remember when the phone numbers only had three numbers and the operator knew everyone? Ours was 266. Remember when there where vacant lots on the peninsula? there where only four homes on Seville Ave. when I was a kid down there. Probably the best time to grow up in Balboa and I'll bet if you think about it, except for the growth, it hasn't changed that much! Balboa was and is an exceptionally nice place to live.
Richard Stahler

I was wondering if you have any recollection of a book published around early 1950 or before called Flight of the Snowbirds (or something close). I have a friend, a sailor, who grew up in Sacramento and read the book in the early 50's -and loved it. I was trying to tack down a copy of it for him. Have you heard of it or do you have anythoughts on how to track it down. (I'm assuming it was about the boat race that took place in Balboa.)
Thanks for you time. I appreciate it.

does anyone know anything of or about ole man cottles market which was located on the pennsula in the early 30 and 40, if so could you please contact me , for my dad worked for the ole man for years

It was a delightful surprise to come upon your website for Balboa Island. I grew up in the area in the 1950’s and 1960’s. I remember well seeing Tim Morgan at the Prison of Socrates, seeing various celebs as they walked down the main street on the Island, such as the Nelson family, David, Ricky, etc. Of course, we used to see Buddy Ebson all the time driving his El Camino. Duke on Wagon Train used to live there also and we’d see him occasionally. There were many others, but the Island was a very special place, frozen bananas, Jolly Roger Restaurant, lots of parties, hanging out. The sixties were the best. Thanks for bringing all the good memories back. I now live in N. California up in the Sierra Nevada mountains with snow and many pine trees, but have never stopped missing the ocean.

Jim,
I am creating a website for rental properties in the Newport Beach area. I would like to add a link to your weather station and web cams. I just wanted to get your permission before I do so.
thanks
steve watson
swmusk@aol.com

 Dear Jim,
We are so happy that you are still maintaining this site. My Dad, Harold Gage (91), is still alive and well and enjoys it so much. We thought you were gone. Please explain if you have time. I have a couple pictures you might enjoy. Will send by separate mail. Thanks. Carolyn (Gage) Oman

Hello Jim!
I have written to you (and/or Y2cW), with these same words before...but I must tell you again; THANK YOU for your patience & tenacity in the face of so much insanity. I hope you know how very many people love your site!

Jim, your site puts a smile on my face everytime I visit. I lived at 808 E. Ocean Front in '83 to '85. Just three doors down from the Sudio Cafe. I am sad to hear it is closing. Even sadder to hear about Heidi passing away. You did a class act in your rememberance piece and tribute to her. She was a Balboa treasure. Snowbound in St.Louis. Best wishes,
Hugh Chapman

Enjoy your website and webcams.
Jim Ulcickas

Hi Jim! I see ya around town but never seem to have a chance to say HI so I'll do it by email. Your website is awesome and one of these days maybe I'll contribute something to it if ya don't mind. :-)
Robin and Debbie

hi jim,
i really enjoy your site. i check the weather section a couple times a day. i'm curious to know if your thermometer is getting sun in the morning. it seems like the temps are the warmest around 8am. growing up as a kid around here i used to track the weather/waves everyday and mark it on calendar. it's nice to be able to see all this on the internet.
thank you very much,
jeremy

Jim, no historical info, just wanted to say how great your little "pimple" looks. I hope it will be a big success for you. You have a great eye for photos. Good Luck. Ps. I agree with the last few posts on 2 cents worth. It is depressing to see how negative and juvenile most of the posts are.
Les Betz

Hi, just put your current picture on my computer as a background for my windows. Odd thing, when the screen was coming on, all the orange in the picture looked like a dawn with brighter oranges and darker hues that gradually brightened with the morning. It may be a sunset, but it was really super to see the colors lighten just like a sunrise. thank you for caring about us. love your site to pieces. It keeps my sanity in this ugly snowy and icy and foggy winter where I live.
susan rose

HI JIM
just looking at balboa .love your websight.all moved in. I live in henderson nv. now! how is everbody at  the postoffice. tell them hi for me. see you when I come for a visit.
PHILLIP GTREIWE

Hi Jim,
I'm a local resident and came across your site. Love it! Especially the police reports. My Grandparents were really close friends with Heidi for years. Poor girl.
Would you ever consider some kind of board for neighbors to meet? I've been looking for people close by to walk with and your site would be a perfect meeting place for us. I live on the penninsula and it's kind of hard for me to meet like minded people around my age to walk with, tennis etc.
Anyway, hope your day is great!
Jenna

March 23, 2004

Why don't these people communicate via their own email addresses?

March 23, 2004

Stephanie: I have no idea who or what the Koolies car club was. That question was from someone other than I. Perhaps someone older than I can help. But if you want to talk about Merle's drive-in, I bet you would get a lot of help. Or how about the old Balboa or Newport Theaters?

March 23, 2004

No, smaller than their waste size.

March 23, 2004

I see those with an IQ smaller then their hat size are back again

March 22, 2004

So, Jim is going to vote for President Bush.....right?

March 22, 2004

The shape of things to come. When my grandfather went to the polls it was to pick the best candidate. When my father went to the polls it was to pick the lessor evil. Now when I go to the polls it's to pick the least corrupt.  Jim Fournier

March 21, 2004

Balboa... Life's a Beach in Balboa... Life's a Dream in Balboa... My family has owned a beach front since I was 9 and now I'm 44... Only lived there full year in '79 and worked at "Balboa Bike Shop" at the pier... Spent every summer there as a kid and at least 2 weeks of every summer since... My favorite time in Balboa is Spring, but all is fine all the time!... Thanks so much for this web site, as I am too far away... Yet when I'm down and when I'm blue... I think of your shores at sunrise and sunset... Walking on the water's edge between the pier and the Wedge... Blessed are you who know this place and keep it well...

March 21, 2004

The Balboa Bay Front cam date and time stamp has been updated. The Main Street cam is going to take a little longer. Thanks for your patience. Jim Fournier

March 20, 2004

Bay cam not working properly that's for sure!

March 19, 2004

Why is Bay Cam dated Saturday, March 20? 24 hours ahead of itself.

March 19, 2004

To Dick Stahler: Hi Dick! I saw your note on the front page of Talesofbalboa.com. I was a neighbor of yours when we were kids. Glad to see you're still kick'n. I barely remember the 'Koolies car club'. Sorry to say, it was a bit before my time, but I do remember you, and Belvue Lane. My Dad and yours did lots of fly fishing together. My father fashioned a 'fly' out of your father's hair. It was called, 'Hap Hazard'. A joke between them. Have a good day, Stephanie A.

March 11, 2004

Where's Cabo Catina and who is Papa Nick???????????

March 11, 2004

It would be nice if the manager of Cabo Cantina would return the TalesOfBalboa's requests for information so it can be listed in the Business Directory.

March 11, 2004

SAY HELLO TO PAPA NICK

March 11, 2004

CABO CANTINA ROCKS! MEET YOU THERE FRIDAY

March 11, 2004

Happy Thursday to you too.....

March 10, 2004

Happy Wednesday everyone

March 09, 2004

The latest on Harborside Restaurant's opening is April 6.

March 08, 2004

Nice pier cam! Looks great!

March 08, 2004

They also come out don't they?

March 08, 2004

Good job Jim. Shine a little light on the cockroaches and they disappear.

March 08, 2004

Check out the new Balboa Pier cam

March 06, 2004

Yea ... right! Weird!

March 06, 2004

You know, the last I knew, this was all out of Jim's pocket...it takes a lot to keep this up and running...why is the front page such a bad place...some people are not happy unless they have something to complain about...Jim, thanks for the chance to say my 2 cents worth.

March 06, 2004

Ocean front camera gone. "Your 2 cents Worth" in this lousey location. No more feature article only emails. It's going down hill fast ! !

March 05, 2004

What happened to the Ballroom camera?

March 05, 2004

Most will be happy as hell when Carrie returns from her broken leg. It will be in about 2 more months.

March 05, 2004

Most languages use numbers and many use letters. Maybe a Sesame Street workshop would help!

March 05, 2004

Well when English isn't your first language it's difficult to deliver the mail to the correct address. Mapquest wouldn't even help.

March 05, 2004

Got Mail?????????? What is up with the Balboa mail. I just received mail for Sushi 21, Shoreline, The Balboa Saloon and the Funzone Boat Company. Am I suposed to deliver the mail? I thought that the Post office made people take a test to get a postal job. Do the testers need testing or is the standard an IQ lower than a shoe size? Can you say mapquest??

March 05, 2004

Maybe Tod IS Hell! ; )

March 03, 2004

maybe Tod hired HELL to assault tales of balboa and freenewport.com's message boards!

March 02, 2004

Yep, keeping my fingers crossed.

March 02, 2004

Did you or will you vote today? God bless America

March 02, 2004

.....and here with his Bush bashing .

March 01, 2004

he's sharing his words of wisdom over on freenewport.com's message board.

March 01, 2004

Sounds to me like HELL has returned!

March 01, 2004

Thanks George Bush for spending my Social Security on the war that no one wanted just to make your cronies rich.

March 01, 2004

Was better before at the old location.
