The pics of the Fun Zone remind me of my first paying job. I worked for the lady who had the gold fish ping pong ball toss right in the middle of the Fun Zone. She also had the concession off to the side near the secondary entrance from the boardwalk that had little plastic ducks swirling around in an artificial river. The gold fish game was obvious and a feature of pretty much any carnival or game site. Land a ping pong ball in the bowl and you won the fish and the bowl. I think it was 10 cents a ball or three for 25 cents. I bet most of the fish died of old age without finding a loving home, though I do remember a few being won.
The duck game was a little less transparent. Each duck had a numeral on the underside denoting a score. The player would pick up a duck and whatever the score determined the prize the player had won. Of course after a while I figured out which ducks paid off better than the others, if a cute girl were playing I'd hint at the "good" ducks!
I was paid fairly. I got 10% of the gross income. I think I was about 10 years old at the time. Some days I made several dollars.

I was thinking recently about a very dear friend of mine whom I knew when I lived in Balboa, and the tragic story of his disappearance, and how it might make a good story, but, more importantly, bring some new clues to the surface about what happened to him and his partner.
His name was Steve Bailey, and he worked part time at the studio cafe, and worked full time as the skipper of the boat that went over to the Island. I can't remember if it was the new (at that time) Catamaran, and the old Catalina Holiday he skippered or what exactly the names of the boats were, but it would be easy to find out.
He and his friend, who I believe was the grandson of the man who owned the Pavilion at the time, crossed from Catalina on a beautiful sunny day, in a small boat, following the bigger boat across to Balboa. His brother Jesse was on the bigger boat at the time and as far as I have heard, they were keeping a pretty good eye on the young men following. I am not sure if the version I was told is correct, or not, because I have heard different theories over the years. Anyway, when they were almost to the other side, the boys veered off because of large wakes, or something. They were never heard from again, nor was any of their craft found. I understand the boat was what was called an unsinkable, and they had one of those radios that gives off a signal for days if anything goes wrong, and the boat was full of flotation pillows, rings, etc....There was an extensive search for months. I understand after the coast guard gave up, the Pavilion owners family, and Jesse went around soliciting donations to keep up the search. Jesse told me when I went to visit him on the island years later, that they would call him and his elderly mother to come to identify bodies for years, that could possible be Steven. It just got to be too much for the mom. I have lost contact with Jesse since that time, and I do not know if the mother is still alive or not. One thing that was particularly sad, was that Steve was the last chance for the mother to be a grandparent. She had lost two sons already, and one was gay. Jesse had never been able to have kids, so Steven was her only hope to carry on the lineage. Steve was a wonderful person. People would have said that about him when he was alive too, not just because he is gone. He was truly exceptional. He was a wonderful friend, full of life like you wouldn't believe, and very very nice. Thanks Barbara Dever

Somewhere around 1958 there was a big square rigger (named Eagle?) docked at the turning basin by the Arches. We launched our first sabot on a SantaAna windy day and sailed from then through the 1970's all over the bay. Snowbirds, then Schooners were the boats of choice, though I always kept the Sabot through college. Does anyone else remember that old square-rigger and what her story was? I think of those days often and wonder if I'm the only one left.

Words Of Wisdom

Why do people who run over a string a dozen times with their vacuum reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give their vacuum one more chance?

Howdy Jim,
I am trying to look up an old childhood friend, Neil Mancinelli, from Hollywood, California.
I found a Neil Mancinelli on your Balboa web site under "The Faces of Balboa", page 12. He is the one with an LA cap and dark sun glasses. I can't make out if it is him or not. Neil should be about 53 years old, medium build, with red hair, that's if he has any left!
If you could please send me any information on how to contact Neil, it would be very much appreciated.
Thank You,

I was a 7 year resident of Balboa back in the late 80's and early 90's after growing up in south west HB now living in Eastern Pennsylvania. Your site is my morning and daily touch-of-home enabling me to scan the webcams and check weather! I will be relocating my family back to the area in August of 2005. There is not a better place to live and raise kids than the Balboa area! Every cold and snowy day I email my wife your homepage and count down the days! Thanks for the great site!!

I'm moving back to California, after living in Texas for 28 years, based with continental, can't wait to hear the water paula
ps minus chuck haha

There was a little museum by the Long Beach Shipyard. My friend worked at the Ship Yard. He said there was on display a old Newspaper stating FREE LOTS Balboa Island....If you bought a Home (he forgets the area) they gave you a Lot on Balbao Island. We were discussing Balbao Island yesterday and a friend said this is not true. Do you know if there was any truth?

"Considerate neighbors control their mutts". Huh? Those two dogs are about as docile as any you would want to find. Jim, get a life!

April 30, 2004

The fish in the bay are full of DDT..... development has run rampant.... good young men and women are risking their lives in Iraq.... and you can't share the bench with a couple a really small dogs..... shame on you for your shallowness.

April 30, 2004

A simple answer to the dogs at Harbour House Coffee. If you don't like the dogs don't go there for coffee.

April 30, 2004

And loose lip morons should grow up.

April 30, 2004

CONSIDERATE NEIGHBORS CONTROL THEIR MUTTS!

April 28, 2004

We now know who has been calling animal control on the 2 nice dogs. Not a nice thing to do when they are your neighbors. Especially business neighbors!!

April 28, 2004

maybe the owners of Harbor House need to start paying rent for those park benches if no one else can use them!

April 27, 2004

Will the complainer of the dogs just chill out! There are so many things for all of us to be thankful for! Go feed a pigeon!

April 27, 2004

Ooooohhhhhhmmmmmm........

April 27, 2004

Just poison the dogs if you're really that upset about them - that'll teach those ingrates that there are conseqences to be paid for getting on your nerves and such flagrant and obscene misuse of public property. Just think about it...men, women and children getting killed everyday in Iraq and not only can't you sit on one of the many public benches but you also have to listen to some barking dogs - when will the injustice end!

April 27, 2004

Someone can always find something to complain about..what a glorius day! It's great to be alive!

April 26, 2004

Anybody notice the summer weather, big waves, and just how great is to be here????? whine whine nag nag---------------

April 26, 2004

You be Chung King. God save the queen!

April 26, 2004

yes, I'm mad as HELL about the dogs, and not being able to sit on that bench. I'm going to just be, and do nothing. And do nothing and be. Chung King.

April 26, 2004

The yapping does get old.

April 26, 2004

Chill out about the dogs on the bench!! You have probably never sat there so what difference does it make? Get a life!

April 26, 2004

An old chum is trying to contact Steven M. Bolduc - does anyone know his whereabouts... photograph on page 10 of "Faces of Balboa" ? I have a phone number and email address for him, however am receiving no replies. I am concerned of his well- being. URGENT! If you have any information as to the whereabouts of Mr Bolduc, please contact his friend, Bill Murphy. artist@billmurphy.com Thank you.

April 26, 2004

Is any body else upset about the people who own the Harbor House Coffee shop comandeering the PUBLIC bench outside their shop for their two yappy dogs all day long?

April 24, 2004

Easy to figure why ask?

April 23, 2004

What is,is-agreed. YET there are more surfbands gigging today than in 1963!!! Go figure-------

April 17, 2004

I've seen Gay drink.

April 17, 2004

Like I said.... and we care because??

April 17, 2004

It’s nice to know that Gay Kelly practices what she preaches. As you know Gay is dead against drinking alcohol to excess because memories of her parents. Gay backs up her convictions by never drinking alcohol herself. We should also give Gay credit for always having a positive word to say about everyone. Gay is really the type of person we should point out to our children as an example of the lives they should live. Thank you Gay.

April 17, 2004

And we care because?

April 16, 2004

Aloha, just got back from Hawaii. Guess who.........

April 15, 2004

April 13, 2004

April 13, 2004

I'm all for the boat show but, how does the show stack up to the regs. about only one boat per slip for fire safety?

April 13, 2004

Apparently no one has change for a nickel.

April 11, 2004

April 03, 2004

April 02, 2004

April 02, 2004

Please watch your language. Jim Fournier

April 01, 2004

I believe Hunter is right on. He's going to the next council meeting with it.

April 01, 2004

Hey Jim, what happened to "Walk to the Beach" on your front page?

April 01, 2004

What are people feelings about the story in the Pilot re Hunter and the Pigeon guy. As a simple aesthetic and health issue it is very clear cut but there seems to be no way to stop the guy feeding the pigeons. If you havent seen him there are usually a LOT of pigeons .

April 01, 2004

It is a beautiful Spring day. It's GREAT to be alive!
